Tenute dei Ciclopi, Etna, Sicily

Nestled in the breathtaking Etna region of Sicily lies the captivating story of Tenute dei Ciclopi, a winery that emerged in 2020 through a remarkable journey of heritage and passion. The estate, spanning 7 hectares, was founded by three university friends, Riccardo, Giordano and Giacomo, who embarked on a mission to preserve the legacy of ancient vineyards, some dating back over a century. These vineyards were acquired from local elders in the Etna region, revered as heroes and giants for their dedication to cultivating the land for generations.

Situated in the enchanting Passopisciaro within the Castiglione di Sicilia municipality, the estate boasts vineyards planted on the rugged terrain at an altitude of 480 meters. The Savoca and Campisi vineyards, planted in the 1970s, stand as a testament to the rich history and resilience of the land, located just a stone's throw away from the Alcantara River.

Venturing into the heart of Randazzo reveals the Nucifora Vineyard - Contrada Pino, a jewel nestled within an ancient extinct crater. Perched at an elevation of 943 meters, this vineyard, with its century-old vines, predates the phylloxera epidemic, showcasing a deep-rooted connection to the land. The Nucifora family, renowned winemakers of Randazzo, are dedicated to restoring the vineyard's heritage, transitioning from modern cement posts to traditional chestnut poles, mirroring the essence of Mount Etna.

In Randazzo, the Contrada Pignatuni and Scrivano Vineyard, planted at 650 meters above sea level, exude a sense of timelessness. The Scrivano vineyard, a small 2000 m2 cru, planted to ancient alberello-trained vines over 90 years old, embodying a legacy of quality and tradition. The high-density cultivation method employed here yields wines of unparalleled excellence, a true reflection of the land's character.

For the passionate souls behind Tenute dei Ciclopi, the revival of these historic vineyards symbolizes a profound appreciation for Sicilian culture and a tribute to the generations of farmers and winemakers who have tended to these lands with unwavering dedication. Their journey back to the roots of Mount Etna echoes the universal theme of "nòstos," a longing for home and heritage that transcends time and place.

Guided by Salvo Foti, the winemaker who ‘refounded’ Etnean viticulture, Tenute dei Ciclopi produces Etna DOC wines exclusively from native grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds, Carricante and Catarratto for the whites.  Each bottle encapsulates the essence of Sicily, where sea salt breezes caress the vines, and the fiery depths of the volcano infuse the grapes with a unique terroir. This wine, a harmonious blend of sea and mountain, narrates the vibrant tapestry of Sicilian culture to all who taste its essence.

With a steadfast commitment to preserving the cultiural heritage of ancient vines and traditional winemaking practices, Tenute dei Ciclopi stands as a beacon of heritage and authenticity in the ever-evolving world of wine. Their dedication to the land and its history paints a vivid portrait of Sicily's past, present, and future, inviting wine enthusiasts on a journey of discovery through the captivating flavors and aromas of the Etna region.
